I’ve had this giant 200ml bottle of YSL L’Homme sitting on my shelf for 6 years now; a silent monument to a fragrance I want to like, but somehow can never fully grasp. Every time I spray it, I brace myself for something bright, spicy, confident… and then almost immediately, it disappears on me. As if my nose just refuses to acknowledge its existence. I don’t know if I’ve become anosmic to one of its molecules, or if this scent is simply too polite, too subtle, too “middle‑lane” for my senses now. But the strangest part is how strongly it reminds me of a very specific period of my life: the year I graduated from my PhD. That same feeling of confusion. That same uncertainty about where I was supposed to go next. That same sense of standing on a stage smiling, while internally asking, “Okay… now what?” The top notes should be bright and energising, the olfactory equivalent of a freshly ironed shirt. Instead, they float for a moment and then vanish like an overwhelmed thought. The spices, violet leaf, white pepper, basil in the heart are elegant, but they remind me of polite conversations at academic receptions, where everyone is pretending they have everything figured out. Smooth, refined… and a bit hollow. And the base, tonka bean, cedar, Tahitian vetiver, feels warm and grounded on paper but on my skin it comes across like a future I couldn’t quite see yet: soft around the edges, blurry, undefined. Maybe that’s why I can never find the right time of day to wear it. Morning? Too muted. Afternoon? Too forgettable. Night? Too clean and airy. It’s like a fragrance stuck between versions of itself, just like I was back then, suspended between the person who survived thesis revisions and the person who still didn’t know what life looked like beyond academia. Sometimes I pick up the bottle, admire the beautiful amber juice and tell myself, “One day I’ll finally get you. One day you’ll click.” But 6 years later, I’m still waiting. l'Homme is an absolute classic. It's timeless, simple, yet perfectly blended. It's one of the few fragrances in my collection that I never get tired of smelling. Sure, it's not overly exciting, it's quite linear, and the performance is awful, but it smells abs...
