Understanding Fragrance Notes: A Beginner's Pyramid

When you read a fragrance description, the notes are usually grouped into three tiers. That structure — the note pyramid — is not marketing fluff. It describes how a scent unfolds on your skin over time.
Top notes
These are the first impression: bright, volatile molecules like citrus and light herbs that you smell in the opening minutes and that fade fastest. They sell the bottle in the store but rarely define the fragrance.
Heart notes
As the top fades, the heart emerges — florals, spices, and fruits that form the core character of the scent. This is what you will smell for the bulk of the wear.
Base notes
The foundation: woods, resins, musks, and ambers that linger for hours and give a fragrance its depth and trail. Base notes are where quality materials show most clearly.
Judge a fragrance by its heart and base, not its opening. The first ten minutes are the least reliable part of any scent.
