I have been trying to get my hands on a sample of this and i finally did! I was interested as i heard it was another interpolation of the declaration/eau de hermes DNA - and in all those fragrances and flankers i have loved parts of them so much but then felt that they never quite got the whole thing right. I love the initial blast of spices, the suggestive sweatiness, the beautiful combinations of seemingly opposed elements that sit on top of each other harmoniously… but then they always devolve into a mess- declaration into a boring and dated soapy iris affair where all the prior elements get dulled out, eau de hermes into a catastrophic rollercoaster of edgelord animalics that smells akin to a urinal cake. most of the declaration flankers aim to dull the spicy cumin aspects which is the exact opposite of what i would want them to fix from that DNA, i mean i know it was divisive- but the whole point of it was to make something that isnt just another blandly palatable citrus freshie or whatever.. its supposed to smell boldly human Epice marine starts out with that exact same great declaration opening- and it stays here much more into the drydown than the other fragrances with its DNA which is what i was hoping for. What does evolve is the marine element here, which grows as an equal contender with those declaration spices pretty quickly. At first i didnt mind it, i like well done aquatics, and i like those declaration spices- so all is good. But very quickly it seems to become evident that these elements just dont go off without a hitch, i dont feel that jean claude ellena successfully got those two elements to actually complement each other - i dont mind the freshness that the aquatic note brings, although it does feel a bit awkward here, but it adds an unexpectedly cold character to the composition that really doesnt jive quite right with those bright sweaty spices. This is a strangely cold aquatic. I like it but i dont love it, i agree with others saying this is an odd mixture… there are moments that the warmth of the spices out wins the aquatic note a bit and you just feel the freshness as a backdrop, and in those moments i do think this works. But overall- i do like that the spices here stay longer in the composition compared to other frags with this DNA, but it is weird and not a fully complementary pairing even though i think a sweaty aquatic with this same concept could be done really well in ...
