Hermessence Brin de Reglisse by Hermès is a Oriental Fougere fragrance for women and men. Hermessence Brin de Reglisse was launched in 2007. The nose behind this fragrance is Jean-Claude Ellena. base notes are Lavender, Licorice and Hay. Created in 2004 by Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermessence is a collection of unique fragrances conceived as olfactory poems using perfuming’s most exclusive elements. As sober and intense as Japanese haiku, they reinvent a nature that is as precious as it is unusual, as if rendered by the inspired writing of a composer in search of the new. Enriched each time the perfumer discovers a new country, a language, a culture or simply extraordinary new ingredients, as of today the line consists of eight fragrances, exclusively available in Hermès stores. Read about this perfume in other languages: Deutsch, Español, Français, Čeština, Italiano, Русский, Polski, Português, Ελληνικά, 汉语, 日本語, Nederlands, Srpski, Română, العربية, Українська, Монгол, עברית. I managed to track down this discontinued scent for a blind buy (as I missed or don't recall it from its original run). It is unique, I'll give it that, but I would guess it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea (which works out well, given that it's no longer for sale). As others have noted, the licorice opening is salty, I would even say savory or umami (I think someone said fishy, but I don't quite get that); it's not an element I particularly love. That salty part only sticks around for 10 or so minutes on my skin and then it's more anis-y. After a little while of that, it then dries down into a much different, pleasant (almost generic) lavendar fresh scent. I am basing this on the older bottle I bought secondhand, so there might be some degradation, etc. in mine. The longevity is very short, maybe a contender for the briefest of the Hermessences (but, again, it might just be my bottle). I tried layering with both cardamusc and musc pallida; they both seemed like they could draw out different facets, but they ultimately swallowed Brin de Reglisse in the drydown (with cardamusc holding on a little better). I had more harmonious layering with Ambre Narguille; it tones down almost all the salty/umami opening, but it really just ends up as an Ambre Narguille flanker with a twist of licorice. I will try it with Epice Marine in the future. Overall, I am going to most likely use Brin de Reglisse exclusively as a layer for other Hermessence scents, as it's just not my style on its own (but given its profile, I'm sure it's a bullseye for some people out there). It is easily my least favorite of the Hermessences by far and I am not upset by it being discontinued (I'm upset on your behalf if you love it, but not for myself). It's not a safe blind buy, and blind buy is really all you can do at this point, so...not a ...
