One of the most beautiful fragrances ever created. Male and female will adore it equally. I smell in here a feminine amber of a thousand other feminine ambers. That’s not l’Ambre’s or Ellena’s fault, nor is it a derivation; I smell many other popular feminine ambers because this arrived near the launch of the craze - this is one of the OGs. And like all OGs, it’s hard to improve upon the originals when especially this one was great in itself. The many others that try to do what l’Ambre does generally fail due to the lack of quality materials, and the lack of Ellena’s attention to the fine-pen-tip details. Call it an effect of price competitiveness, if you will, or just sheer cynicism on the part of other brands. L’Ambre takes its cue from the Eau of the same name, which, in essence, is trying to present us with a perfume that has the notes pyramid turned upside down. Nathalie Feisthauer’s and Ralf Schwieger’s creation was brilliant, but they didn’t play with amberics, opting for the chypre genre instead. Ellena’s task to achieve the same thing but with amber notes would be a true showcase of his masterful skills. And, you know what, he does it… nearly. Ambergris at the top; check. Amber at the top; check. However, you quickly realize where Ellena doesn’t quite pull it off because the amber strings straight-down into the heart where we get a lovely hesperidic component. So, in one sense, “check” for putting hesperidics in the heart instead of the top, but the amber didn’t get the memo and continues its march down its luminous path. And later it meets up with patchouli, which attempts to be mostly green and pepper forward, and to much of a degree it is, but it’s a bit crowded by the party-crashing amber. Patchouli and vanillic balsams are lovers that have been sharing the same bed for ages, so the final dry down is basically just an amber and not a duet of distinct voices. Close, JCE, very close. However, I’m not writing l’Ambre off because it’s still really good. Again, it’s an OG of this new-school feminine amber craze of the last decade, and it was done with a lot of care by a master supported by a house not typically known to skimp. I have a neighbor that wears one of l’Am...
